On 25 May 2018, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Namibia, Dr Hage Geingob, launched a National Clean Up Campaign “Namibia, Healthy and Clean”. SASSCAL supported the call as it is aligned with SASSCAL’s vision to support improved quality of life in southern Africa.

Our environment is closely linked with our countries development and the populations’ state of wellbeing. A dirty and polluting environment has detrimental effects on the populations health, by contaminating water resources, promoting disease and ultimately polluting food resources. Sustainable development cannot be realised and achieved in a dirty environment. A responsible attitude towards the environment is the backbone of livelihoods’ sustainability.

SASSCAL teamed up with the Clean Up Namibia Campaign through the Khomas Regional Council, to provide the Windhoek City Police with protective clothing for the campaign. SASSCAL Executive Director, Dr Jane Olwoch presented Windhoek City Police Community and Public Relations representative Constable Simasiku with overalls at a hand-over ceremony held at the SASSCAL Regional Secretariat offices on Thursday 24 May 2018.

The aim of the National Clean-up Campaign was “to instill responsible habits which residents should adopt” and “to encourage residents to exercise civic courtesy by being mindful about the damage caused to the aesthetic look and well-being of their surroundings”.

At the crack of dawn on the 2nd of June 2018, as part of an awareness-raising of the clean-up campaign in the Windhoek Green Belt area, the SASSCAL team joined the Ondundu Development and Youth Adventure group on the Kaiser Wilhelm Hill hiking trail to enhance and embrace the culture of active healthy living lifestyles as well as promote domestic tourism.
