Climate services are a key component of National Adaptation Plan (NAP) processes, which require the analysis of current climate conditions, future climate change scenarios and the identification of adaptation strategies, including the capacity to finance and implement effective adaptation options. The Extreme Climate Facility (XCF) proposed by the African Risk Capacity (ARC) developed a climate index insurance scheme, which is based on the Extreme Climate Index (ECI): an objective, multi-hazard index capable of tracking changes in the frequency or magnitude of extreme weather events, thus indicating possible shifts to a new climate regime in various regions.
WHAT DATA DOES THE PLATFORM PRESENT?
The platform displays ECI, SPI (03 & 12) and SHI data with monthly, daily and sometimes yearly increments. The platform also displays future projections for the abovementioned Indices for the years 2020 until 2054
HOW DOES THE PLATFORM PRESENT THIS DATA?
The platform provides any user with the ability to search for data and visualise it using line or bar graphs.
The searches can be basic (get all data for any cluster point) or can be more custom (get data for a cluster point for a given year or index type).
The visualisation platform is developed to be accessible on all modern web
browsers and is powered by NodeJS (for all the business logic), MongoDB (for
persistant data storage and retrieval) and Angular 2 (for the client interface).
The ECI visualisation tool is still in its development phase.
