Johannes Beck recently joined the SASSCAL Regional Secretariat as Environmental Data Specialist.

Johannes has an interdisciplinary professional background in both academic research, in the natural sciences, as well as sustainable land management in Sub-Saharan Africa. After having studied physics and working in experimental quantum physics research at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, Johannes decided to add a very different aspect to his professional career. Being interested in developmental and environmental challenges, he shifted his focus to Sub-Saharan Africa, where he has been working in various countries over the last six years, in different roles in the fields of sustainable land management and climate change.

Johannes considers the availability of systematic scientific data a fundamental condition to overcome the enormous challenges related to anthropogenic climate change and other large-scale dynamics induced by humanity. With SASSCAL, he intends to make a significant and lasting contribution to the establishment of a corresponding body of relevant data for Southern Africa.
