The Southern African Science Services Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL) through its National Node of Angola, in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation will hold a two-day high-level National Dialogue on Climate Change in Huambo, Angola.

The event, slated from 17 to 18 October 2022, will engage the executive’s highest-level entities to reflect on national, regional, and international environmental policies and subsequently frame the national agenda into the COP 27 roadmap in Egypt.

The high-level event will also see the announcement of the commencement of the SASSCAL 2.0 Research Portfolio.

SASSCAL is a joint initiative of six member states namely Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Germany, established to promote science for sustainable development as well as scientific responses to challenges of global change. The main objective of SASSCAL is to strengthen and develop scientific research in Southern Africa on issues related to climate change and sustainable land use in collaboration with like-minded institutions in the region.

The Dialogue will bring together high-level government structures in Angola, as well as different actors who are part of the National System of Science, Technology and Innovation,  stakeholders dealing with inter- and transdisciplinary issues in the field of environment and climate change to facilitate the knowledge transfer/sharing as well address the challenges facing these sectors.

It is envisaged that H.E Vice-President of the Republic of Angola will officially open the meeting.

Participants to the dialogue include representatives of the Government of Huambo Province, Ambassadors of SASSCAL member states in Angola, Germany, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa, and seven Ministers of State whose mandates are related to the environment and climate change.

Also slated to attend are National Directors of the different Ministries, Scientific Research and Development Institutions, as well as representatives of civil society organizations.

SASSCAL will be represented by the Chairperson of the Council of Ministers, Board Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, the Executive Director, Director of Science and Technologies and Capacity Development, Programme Coordinator, Programme Officer, Scientific officer, and principal investigators of SASSCAL 1.0 and SASSCAL 2.0.
