On Saturday 12 January 2019, family, friends and colleagues bid farewell to Dr David Joubert during a memorial service held in Windhoek, Namibia. Dr Joubert has passed away unexpectedly on 15 December 2018, during an operation in Cape Town.

Dr David Joubert, Dave, as colleagues and friends knew him, was particularly passionate about capacity development and many of us will remember him as in this picture: surrounded by students

Dr Joubert was the Director of Namibia Ecosystem Services and in particular to the SASSCAL community, was known as a respected researcher in the field of savanna and rangeland ecology. He had years of experience as researcher and lecturer at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) . Dave will be remembered by countless students and researchers, whom he inspired and mentored.

Dr Joubert was the Principal Investigator (PI) of two SASSCAL research projects (2012 to 2018), which produced 2 PhD students, 7 Master students and supported many more Bachelor and Honors students. The work for just these two projects was further documented in over 20 publications.

The SASSCAL community is saddened with the untimely loss of a great personality, that made such a valuable contribution to the knowledge base in Namibia, inspired and impacted so many young life’s and still had so many plans for the future. His contribution to the research landscape in Namibia will always be remembered. Our sincere condolences go out to Dave’s family.
