The Climate Science Exhibition will provide a platform to connect institutions sharing practical applications of climate change research in communities. It seeks to increase understanding on climate change adaptation technologies that have been developed for the communities, while inspiring advocacy for climate change solutions to societies.

The exhibitors will showcase innovative and practical climate change adaptation technologies contributing to societal adaptation measures. Through the Science Exhibition, SASSCAL aims to promote awareness on the impact and required actions regarding climate change mitigation opportunities and the necessary measures for adaptation on climate change with a view to facilitating more sustainable methods.

Background

Climate change research has been on-going for decades with several international research outputs. International partnerships and agreements, supported by hard science, are proving effective in combating wide-ranging environmental threats. The Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL) is a joint initiative of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Germany in response to the challenges of global change.

The current processes of global change, including demographic change, climate change and the globalisation of economic systems, are both a challenge and an opportunity for societies worldwide. Climate change is affecting the lives of millions of people in all parts of the world. Current projections indicate that there is an urgent need to develop practical solutions on how to adapt to these challenges in due course. Science and research offer innovative and sustainable approaches to address possible impacts of current and future changes.

In this regard, the role of science is to be understood as a service to those societies that are most severely affected by climate change and to provide decision-makers with evidence-based results and advice. Drawing on the scientific information about our warming climate and associated global and local impacts on environmental and economic systems, the proposed science Exhibition will exhibit innovative technologies, projects and experiments based on up to date research in the region.
