SASSCAL expresses its warm welcome to Dr. Lameck Mwewa who is joining the organisation as the newly appointed Director of the SGSP-IWRM at the Namibia University of Science and Technology.
Dr Mwewa, a Senior Academic in the Faculty of Natural Resources and Spatial Sciences, has served in the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) in various capacities, including Acting Special Advisor to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Resources and Spatial Sciences for nine years as well as Head of Department of Land Management for three years. Dr Mwewa also sits on several national and international technical committees and review committees for two publications.
In terms of education, Dr Mwewa holds a PhD in Natural Sciences (Dr rer. Nat) with magna cum laude, focusing on Food and Energy Geography from Justus Liebig Universität Giessen, Germany; a M.Sc. in Geoinformatics from ITC, the Netherlands, focusing on 3D GIS Modelling, a B. Eng. Surveying Engineering, UNZA, Zambia and is a Fellow in Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD).
He is also a recipient of several awards such as the rare Justus Liebig Medal Award in recognition of his contribution to the internationalisation strategy of Justus Liebig Universität Giessen, Special Achievement in GIS Award from ESRI, Redland California, the best NORAD Award and fellowship for top Engineering student, SIZ Award for best graduating student, Rockefeller Foundation LEAD award for the effort in protecting citizens against environmental pollution from mine operators.
His research interest is in environment, development, and sustainability with a special bias towards renewable energy systems and its relation to food and water security, with SADC as the region of focus. He leads and coordinates a few research and capacity development projects that avails opportunities to young scientists. His personal ambition is to see Sub-Saharan Africa liberated from the shackles of poverty and underdevelopment for the benefit of all generations, using science and technology as tools to enhance resilience and sustainability. SASSCAL will be very blessed to navigate into the future with Dr Mwewa as a team member.
