contributing to the creation of a knowledge-based society through academic and non-academic capacity development programmes and activities

SASSCAL facilitates capacity development at the level of people, infrastructure and institutions. This is done through:

  • SASSCAL Graduate Studies Programmes (SGSP)
  • Bursaries and scholarships scheme for postgraduate studies
  • Short courses
  • Investments in research and technical infrastructure
  • SASSCAL Alumni Network Building

SASSCAL in collaboration with leading regional Universities developed and accredited MSc programmes in

  • Applied Science on Earth Observation, Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing (accredited for University of Zambia, Namibia University of Science and Technology, University of Botswana, and Cape Peninsula University),
  • Applied and Environmental Geology (collaboration between University of Namibia and the Federal Department for Geosciences and Natural Resources),
Dryland Forestry at University of Stellenbosch (in cooperation with University of Namibia and University of Botswana).

SASSCAL established an Alumni Network to provide further skills development support to former SASSCAL graduates and scholarship holders aimed at broadening their career options through alumni programmes and initiatives. One such initiative currently being implemented is the Climate Research Alumni and Postdocs in Africa (CLAPafrica) Programme for the promotion of future leaders in the field of climate research and protection. This is a scholarship programme funded by the BMBF with a total of approx. 4.5 million Euros and is implemented scientifically and operationally by DAAD from 2019 – 2023 in collaboration with SASSCAL and WASCAL. Graduate Studies Programmes

To contribute to human capacity development in southern Africa, SASSCAL aims to establish five Graduate Studies Programmes in member countries with funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in collaboration with national, regional and German partner institutions.

To this end, SASSCAL started a process of establishing the Graduate Studies Programme in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) to address a need expressed by the regional water sector for highly qualified professionals in the field of IWRM in the southern Africa. The IWRM programme will be launched in July 2020. More details will follow soon.
